He pleaded guilty to felony assault in 2009 for beating his then-girlfriend Rihannahard enough to require a hospital stay.
Now Chris Brown is going after the synth-pop band Chvrches for a statement they made Thursday criticizing the EDM producer Marshmello for recently collaborating with Brown and rapper Tyga on his new track Light It Up.
The 29-year-old singer took the the band’s own Instagram, leaving a comment on their original statement.
‘BUNCH OF LOSERS,’ he wrote on the band’s Instagram. ‘these are the type of people I wish walked in front of a speeding bus full of mental patients.’
‘Keep groveling over your own insecurities and hatred. IM BLACK AND PROUD. AND I KNOW IT HURTS THAT U GUYS ARE STRUGGLING WIT LIFE OR PEACE SO U ARE FORCED TO SEE MY SUCCESS,’ continued his screed.
‘You aren’t even #2, ( REMEMBER 2nd place only means YOU LOST FIRST! TA-TA. GOODDAY PEASANTS,’ he concluded, finishing off with kissing and dancing emojis.
The ruckus started when Chvrches posted a statement to their social media accounts calling out the producer Marshmello.
The group, originally founded in Glasgow, Scotland, had collaborated with Marshmello for the track Here With Me, released in March.
‘We are really upset, confused and disappointed by Marshmello’s choice to work with Tyga and Chris Brown,’ wrote the band.
‘We like and respect Mello as a person but working with people who are predators and abusers enables, excuses and ultimately tacitly endorses that behaviour. That is not something we can or will stand behind,’ they concluded.
Brown’s 2009 assault of Rihanna wasn’t his only brush with the law.
In 2012, the R&B singer was involved in an alteration at a New York night club with rapper Drake and his entourage that left eight people with injuries.
The following year, singer Frank Ocean alleged that Brown had shoved him and threatened to shoot him during an argument over a parking space outside a West Hollywood recording studio.
The same year he had 1,000 hours added to his community service requirements after his involvement in an alleged hit-and-run accident in Los Angeles.
Brown was sentenced to 131 days in jail in 2014 following parole violations, though he was released early due to overcrowding.
He was arrested again in 2016, after a woman called the police claiming he had threatened her with a gun inside his home. He engaged in a standoff with the LAPD after refusing them entry with their search warrant, all while posting inflamed Instagram videos about the incident.
Following a Florida concert in July 2018, the Beautiful People singer was arrested on a felony battery charge and released on $2,000 bail.
The singer was arrested in France in January for aggravated rape after being accused by a 24-year-old woman. No charges were eventually filed.
Rapper Tyga also struck back at Chvrches’ statement, though in a more subdued manner.
‘Where all God’s children. Everyone makes mistakes no ones perfect,’ he commented. ‘Let’s Keep the energy positive.’
The Taste rapper has been sued by multiple women for filming them topless, then releasing the unedited footage after promising their bare breasts would not be shown.
He was also the object of criticism after it was revealed he was dating reality star Kylie Jenner. Their relationship allegedly date back to when she was only 16, despite 18 being the age of consent in California, where both Tyga and Kylie live.
Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry was flooded with threats of violence and rape, as well as crude sexist insults, which she documented on Twitter.
‘Angry men on the internet can call me all the names they want. I still think domestic abuse is wrong,’ she wrote in one of the captions.
