Progress Chukwuyem is a Nigerian music author, singer, performer and music minister from Ika South, Delta state, Warri, Nigeria. Progress emerged the winner of the Nigerian Idol Season 7 in 2022 of which the finale was on Sunday, May 22, 2022.

The 21-year-old singer emerged the winner after polling more votes from the fans to beat fellow finalist Zadok in an electrifying and suspense – filled grand finale. The top-2 secured 45 million votes in the finale week alone against over 220 million total votes all season long.

He won the grand prizes which altogether was worth ₦100 million (cash prize of ₦30 million, a brand-new SUV, a Bigi branded refrigerator and a year’s supply of Bigi drinks. He will also get to record an EP and six music videos, a weekend getaway from TravelBeta, and a DStv Explora fully installed with a 12 months premium subscription).

Some of the high points of the grand finale were when Simi who was one of the Judges of the Nigerian Idol season 7 took on the stage to sing her hit song, Duduke. Fellow judge D’banj also performed a medley of his biggest songs, including Oliver Twist, Emergency and Your Face Show. Other performers at the highly-charged live show included Nigerian Idol season 6 winner Kingdom, the Nigerian Idol season 7 top 10, and popular musician Pheelz.

Early Life and Education

The singer and the songwriter was Born 21 years ago in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. Progress is from Ekwueze-Abavo, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State. He was raised in Warri in Delta State and had his Basic education in Delta State.

Progress took up music as a career when he was sixteen years old. The only record of his public music profile before his win on Nigerian Idol were mostly music covers and participation in another music competition few years ago.

On February 2022, Progress auditioned for the Nigeria Idols Season 7 competition and got the golden ticket to participate in the competition after he impressed the judges with a well-knitted rendition of John Legend’s “All of Me”. Progress came with so much confidence, knowing he could win. He had asserted that he has all it takes to be a winner. This assertion wasn’t a fluke as he showed great efforts towards it.

Progress actually stood out amongst many of his peers and his vocal deftness made him to excel through the Auditions, the theatre Week, as well as the Nigerian Idol Top 12. He defeated Zadok Aghalengbe, age 27, from Edo State, at the grand finale.

At the age of 16, Progress competed in his first music competition tagged “Theater Weekly”.  Although he didn’t win but was among the top ten. This competition gave Progress Chukwuyem the belief and courage that not only could he do music well, he would register for Nigerian Idol and become the next Nigerian Idol. After pulling off impressive performances on the Nigerian Idol Live Stage every single week, Progress had already endeared the minds of viewers as well as made his journey to the grand finale smooth.

Being a choir member in church, Progress Chukwuyem cited Jonathan McReynolds as his musical influence. McReynolds is the gospel artist that released the popular song, “Make room”.

Progress Chukwuyem still has a father that is alive but unfortunately. His mother is not alive to witness this great feat from his son who has been so dedicated to music.
