Photo: BHM One of Nigeria’s most successful and iconic musicians, King Sunny Ade gave what is clearly a virtuoso performance at the recently held Tyme Out with Tee A concert on Sunday, November 16, 2014 in Lagos. The thrilling event was also graced by other frontline acts including Davido, Dammy Krane, Ras Kimono and Ali Baba. King Sunny Ade is one of Africa’s most recognisable music legends, having started his music career as far back as the 1960s. He has amassed several awards and  nominations over the course of 5 decades including a Grammy Award nomination in 1998 and an outstanding contribution award at the Reggae and World Music Awards in 2008. Over the course of almost 50 years as a frontline performer, he has remained relevant in the local and international music scene and is one of the few acts credited with having created entirely different genres of music all over the world. As a mark of his outstanding contribution to music in Africa, he has influenced generations of musical icons along with greats such as Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. One of those inspired by the longevity of King Sunny Ade is masked musician, Lagbaja who derived inspiration from his groundbreaking juju sound while incorporating the use of the pedal steel guitar and accordion into percussion-driven indigenous African rhythms. His unprecedented international success with Island Records in the early 1980s led to the opening up of opportunities for African acts such as Youssou N’Dour from Senegal and Mali’s Salif Keita. His level of acceptance by music lovers in foreign lands has massively helped in projecting African music to the rest of the world in an unprecedented manner. Born in 1946, the 68 year-old juju music exponent continues to go from strength to strength as a recording artist with forty-seven studio and three live performance albums in his catalogue. And as he proved at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos venue of Tyme Out With Tee-A on November 16, 2014 he remains an eternal crowd favourite and man of imposing stage presence. Watch his amazing performance below……
